How to lock the YouTube screen on Android

YouTube has a built-in screen lock for its mobile player. It is useful for stopping accidental taps during one video, but it does not lock the whole phone or control everything inside YouTube.

Fastest option: open a video in the YouTube mobile app, tap Settings, then tap Lock screen. To unlock, tap the player and choose Tap to unlock.

What YouTube screen lock covers

YouTube says screen lock prevents unintentional taps or swipes from interrupting playback. Its official steps are documented here. The lock applies to the player while that video is open.

YouTube also warns that some in-app notifications and ads may temporarily allow interaction. After the notification is dismissed or the ad ends, the player lock continues.

Choose the right boundary

OptionWhat it doesWhat it does not do
YouTube screen lockStops accidental player taps and swipesDoes not lock other apps or every surface inside YouTube
Android app pinningKeeps one app in view until unpinnedDoes not block navigation inside that app
ToddlerLockBlocks accidental touches and returns the phone to the chosen appCannot read or police the contents of that app

For a short video

  1. Download or open the official YouTube mobile app.
  2. Start the video and open the player settings.
  3. Choose Lock screen.
  4. Keep the phone with the screen on and supervise the first handover.
  5. Tap the player and choose Tap to unlock when you want the controls back.

These steps concern touch blocking during playback. They do not describe background playback with the display off, and YouTube Kids can have different controls.

When a whole-phone boundary matters

If the child can reach Home, Recents or another app, YouTube's player lock is too narrow. Android app pinning is the built-in next step. Read the Guided Access comparison for its exit gesture and credential settings.

ToddlerLock adds a transparent touch-blocking layer and uses Accessibility access to notice when another app comes forward. Release is a hold, then slide. It still cannot stop picture-in-picture windows or understand which video is open inside YouTube.

Use the smallest boundary that works. Try YouTube's own lock first. If you need the phone to return to one chosen app, use a whole-app boundary and test it on your device before handing it over.
